ABOUT THE BOOK REPUBLICAN CUBA

This book reviews events, champions, heroes and anti-heroes during the fifty years of Republican Cuba. The author has succeeded in presenting a very complete panorama of what Cuba was during its republican times. From Estrada Palma to José Miguel Gómez, Menocal, Machado, Batista, Grau, Prio… every presidency studied in detail. From gangsters to botelleros, from honest politicians to charlatans. Every important event is presented in its proper dimension and context. The book is meant for those who wish to know the history and explore the paradox of Cuba: a land blessed by nature, flush with generous and good human talent, but unexpectedly fallen prey to ambitious and unscrupulous men who did not stop at separating families, killing their brothers and sisters while exploiting Cuba’s bounty for their private use.

Republican Cuba covers from the independence of the island in 1902 to the demise of its liberties in 1959, when it was taken over by the Communists. It shows the strides and sacrifices of many Cubans trying to build a new nation and how a few men destroyed their efforts and brought about poverty, lawlessness, executions, fear and misery, just to justify their hunger for power. This book is the story of the first half of the XX century in Cuba, when its citizens were learning how to govern themselves; they made lots of mistakes but the Republic had become a progressive and prosperous nation until the Communists took it over, throwing more than a million Cubans into exile.

The presentation will be done in Spanish, but this first edition is written in English. Just published on July 14, 2011, the book is 494 pages perfect-bound in paperback, published by Dupont Circle Editions with over 1200 historical photographs, many of them seen for the first time.

After the presentation we’ll have the opportunity to meet the author. Wine & hors d’oeuvres will be served.
